Definition of a big wave and causes (formation process)

A tsunami is a wave or series of waves that are produced in sea waters on having been pushed violently by a force that displaces it vertically.
Waves are undulations on the surface of the water.

--The wind. It transmits part of his energy to the surface of the water due to the rubbing. It is the main cause.
--Tidal wave.
--Corrents.
--Tides.
--Volcanic eruptions.

Almost all tsunamis of which we have noticed are produced between the islands of Java and Sumatra due to the eruption of the Krakatoa volcano, on May of 1883, where the produced wave reached an average height of 42 meters.

Japan, for his geographical location, is the most struck country according to tsunamis and earthquakes.

How would affect one big tsunami to population?


The tsunami is between the most frightening physical phenomenon and it has been responsible of the big loss of life and of the extensive destruction.
The tsunami has important impact in humanity, concretely on social and economic sectors of our societies. The historical facts show what has happened with the enormous destruction of coastal communities across the world and that the socioeconomic impact of the tsunami in the past has been enormous.

What must we do to survival in a tsunami episode?

1-If we lives on coast and an earthquake has the sufficiently strong thing to crack walls, is possible that in twenty following minutes it could produces a tsunami.

2-If we are alerted of the proximity of a tsunami, we must going up in a high zone of at least 30 mts. on the level of the sea in natural area.


3-Almost all of tsunamis appears, first, as a concentration of the water of the sea that leaves in dry big extensions of the sea bed. Run, do not stop, you have to move away to a high zone, the tsunami will come with a speed of more than 100 Km/h.

4-If you are in a coast but inside the sea, go rapidly out to it. A tsunami is destructive only near the coast. In fact to approximately 5.600 mts. out to sea or to a bigger height than 150 mts. on the level of the sea land in you can be considered to be an assurance.


5-Have always present that a tsunami can penetrate for rivers, gullies or marshes, several kilometres land in, therefore it is necessary to remove of these.

6-A tsunami can have ten or more destructive waves in 12 hours; try to have to hand clothes of coat, specially for the children.


7-Try to have portable radio set, which allows him to be informed, and dry batteries of spare.
